Northern Stage, a LORT D 240 seat regional theater in White River Junction, VT, seeks an experienced Scenic Artist/Carpenter to join the full-time staff. Northern Stage produces a mainstage season, an education season, a New Works festival, and 4-6 other events year-round. This position reports directly to the Technical Director and works closely with the Props Manager and other production department heads to help execute all elements of scenic fabrication and paint treatment. 


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Execute all paint techniques needed for in-house built scenery including carving, faux finishes, texturing, and drop painting. Do any touch ups and notes necessary for outsourced scenery during the load-in and tech process.
  • Complete any paint and scenic notes as necessary during the run of a show.
  • Keep the Paint Shop and associated work areas clean and safe. Maintain tools and equipment necessary for the Paint Shop.
  • Purchase and track all paints-related supplies for each production with a keen eye on budget.
  • Assist the Technical Director with construction of any in-house built scenery. 
  • Assist with changeover between productions, primarily focused on scenery and paints but helping additional departments as necessary.
  • Serve as a Deck Carpenter on run crews of shows as needed based on the scale of production.
  • Assist the Props Manager with purchasing, fabrication, and alterations. 
  • Provide support for events outside the mainstage and education seasons.
  • Support other production departments as needed.


Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in professional shops. A combination of education and professional experience will be considered. 
  • Knowledge of theatrical scenic painting, surface treatments, and building techniques.
  • Ability to read construction drawings and paint elevations. Experience with AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks a plus.
  • Proficiency in color matching, carving, faux finishes, texturing, marbling, and wood graining.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office & Google Suite.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills. Experience managing and adhering to budgets.
  • Working knowledge of theatrical safety conventions, OSHA regulations, rigging, and fire codes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to approach challenges collaboratively.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools.
  • Rigging, welding, and steel fabrication experience a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a box truck.
  • Comfortable working at heights in excess of 20 feet in a lift and on a tension mesh grid.
  • Ability to safely lift 75 lbs.
  • BA or BFA in technical theater a plus.

 

Job Type Full time, with some nights and weekends required 

Contract Dates: 7/8/2024 - 5/26/2025 with possibility for renewal

Compensation: $39,000 - $42,000 annualized salary BOE paid bi-weekly (overtime exempt)

Northern Stage produces a mainstage season, an education season, a New Works festival, and 4-6 other events year-round. This position reports directly to the Production Manager and works closely with visiting AEA and non-AEA Stage Managers to help coordinate stage management activities necessary to execute programming. 

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work as an Assistant Stage Manager on a minimum of 3 mainstage productions and 1 fully realized education production, with the possibility of Stage Managing special events and smaller educational presentations.
  • Coordinate the purchasing of all stage management materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for production. 
  • Maintain Green Room hospitality stock and supervise space cleanliness and organization. 
  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and safety of all backstage areas and rehearsal studios.
  • Assist the Production Manager with the scheduling and calendar coordination of rehearsal studio and theater use.
  • Assist the Production Manager with the onboarding and orientation of Stage Managers.
  • Assist in build, load-in, and strike when not actively stage managing. Best efforts will be made for these tasks to be aligned with individualized professional development goals and interests.
  • Work with the Production Manager to support projects outside of regular shop work such as space maintenance and facilitating theater and equipment rentals. 
  • Provide support for events outside the mainstage and education seasons.
  • Support other production departments as needed.


Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in professional theatrical stage management. A combination of education and professional experience will be considered.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office & Google Suite.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Working knowledge of theatrical safety conventions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to approach challenges collaboratively.
  • Basic proficiency with hand and power tools and basic knowledge of theatrical lighting practices.
  • Ability to read theatrical ground plans.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Comfortable working at heights in excess of 20 feet in a lift and on a tension mesh grid.
  • Ability to safely lift 50 lbs.
  • BA or BFA in technical theater a plus.

Northern Stage, a LORT D 240 seat regional theater in White River Junction, VT, seeks an experienced Sound Engineer to join the full-time staff. Northern Stage produces a mainstage season, an education season, a New Works festival, and 4-6 other events year-round. This position reports directly to the Production Manager and Technical Director/Associate Production Manager and works closely with Sound Designers, Directors, and other production department heads to execute the approved designs for all Northern Stage productions and events, as well as maintains the organization’s sound-related equipment.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the daily operations within the Sound Department including leading the installation, maintenance, and strike of all sound elements for each production.
  • Communicate inventory availability and space limitations to designers during the design process. Interpret and budget designs when submitted.
  • Work with the Sound Designer, Technical Director, and Production Manager to keep designs on budget and schedule.
  • Coordinate any necessary show-specific rentals, including their transportation.
  • Responsible for creation and maintenance of practical sound needs.
  • Collaborate with the Electrics department regarding any video or lighting-related needs that interface with Sound via show control. 
  • Program and operate QLab and the audio console as needed for all musicals, plays, and special events.
  • Coordinate any overhire crew necessary with the Production & General Management Teams.
  • Supervise and train an A2 when necessary for production.
  • Attend scheduled production and staff meetings.
  • Coordinate with Stage Management to provide rehearsal sound support as requested.
  • Purchase, maintain and repair sound inventory and manage renting/borrowing relationships with neighboring organizations. 
  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the amp room and sound storage spaces.
  • Provide support for events outside the mainstage and education seasons.
  • Support other production departments as needed.


Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of experience in professional theatrical sound engineering and design. A combination of education and professional experience will be considered.
  • Ability to mix musicals with up to 26 wireless microphones and a 10-piece orchestra.
  • Proficiency programming sound in QLab and the ability to run a Yamaha CL5.
  • In depth knowledge of signal flow, RF coordination, wireless microphone prep/maintenance, and the use of both digital and analog consoles.
  • Proven ability to evaluate, budget, and execute designer drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office & Google Suite. Experience with CAD, Vectorwroks, Pro Tools, & Logic Pro a plus.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organization skills.
  • Excellent numerical skills and attention to detail. Experience managing and adhering to budgets. 
  • Thorough knowledge of theatrical safety conventions, OSHA regulations, and fire codes.
  • Knowledge of theatrical rigging standards and safety. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to approach challenges collaboratively.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a box truck.
  • Comfortable working at heights in excess of 20 feet in a lift and on a tension mesh grid.
